Modus Operandi: October 16, 2011 My 32 bit images of Windows XP Pro SP2 require a minimum 1 GB of RAM. ~ Vista Lite Ultimate needs 1+ GB RAM ~ 7 Ultimate needs minimum 2 GB RAM Windows 7 64 bit image can utilize more than 3 GB RAM 1. Remove customer's HD. 2. Attach customers HD to my PC. 3. Boot Vista Lite on my working HD. On first boot, Windows will automatically fix file system errors on customer's HD. Sometimes, however, the file system is so badly corrupted it is neccessary to perform a chkdsk /r using the rocovery console of the Windows XP installation CD. 4. Use Sequoia to browse customer's HD. 5. If necessary take ownership of custmer's data folders. 6. Move customer's data to my HD. If customer has many gigs of data then I proceed to remove dust from Desktop PC 7. Use Bootit NG to wipe Customer's HD making it entirely free space. 8. Use Bootit NG to deploy image of Windows XP, Vista or 7 from my HD to customer's While image is deploying, I proceed to remove dust from desktop PC by using a 120 PSI air compressor. Sometimes I travel lightly and will remove the dust using paper towels, tooth brush, paint brush and Q-tips + my breath. Removing dust involves dismantling the PC. Dust is removed from: the propellers of fans, inside the power supply, the heat sink, PCI cards, the motherboard, female interfaces like NIC, USB and modem. Dust removal from laptops is more complicated, requiring more difficult disassembly and reassembly. 9. Copy back customer's data from my HD to theirs. 10. Replace customer's HD into customer's PC 11. Almost always, I must enter bios to change SATA operation from AHCI to ATA, IDE, Auto or compatibility. Many times a restored image will not boot on first try. For Windows XP images, a black screen or a disk read error can be fixed by BootitNG. When viewing the properties of the boot partition the following pops up: Invalid Head and SPT Values exist in the BPB. Fix it? Yes/no Type "y" for yes and problem is solved! A repair installation on top of my images of Windows XP is sometimes necessary because the deployment of Windows XP involves the use of 7 different HAL files. Typically some Pentium 4s and older Pentium IIIs require this procedure which causes the Nero 7 ultra already installed on my images to malfunction. Following a repair installation of Windows XP, Nero must be uninstalled then reinstalled. See http://drpcdr.ca/repairxp.txt. Frequently, the Vista or Win 7 Boot Recovery disk is needed to perform initial boot repairs because the images of Windows were created on a HD with a different signature. The Boot repair disks can be downloaded from the following links: http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/download-windows-vista-x64-recovery-disc/ http://neosmart.net/blog/2009/windows-7-system-repair-discs/ Sometimes the Vista or Win 7 image will not boot on some PCs. If so, I boot customer's HD on my PC. Then I use regedit to edit registry settings of HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/ Change the start DWORD values for msahci from 3 to 0 and, pciide from 0 to 3. I replace customer's HD into customer's PC and bingo! it usually boots! Acer and some other HDs automatically morph the file system of the boot partition, preventing the OS from booting up. The remedy is to deploy a small dummy active partition first in step 8 above. Then below that deploy the real boot partition. Try to boot Windows on customer's PC. Use BootitNG to confirm active dummy partition has changed. Then set active the real boot partition below morphed dummy partition. Now Windows should boot normally! This works best for Windows Vista and Windows 7. May NOT work for XP. Why does Acer do this? 12. Upon first boot, I respond appropriately to the detect new hardware wizard When the wizard has finished, I Reboot PC. Then I use device manager and AIDA64 to determine the identity of the devices in need of drivers. 13. If necessary, I download the device drivers from the manufacturer's website and install them. 14. I install peripheral devices like printer and webcam. 15. I use Bootit NG to image drive C:\ and paste image files onto drive D:\. Just before I create the image of C:\, I schedule a scandisk to automatically fix file system errors on drive D:\. I also use Avast Antivirus to schedule a boot-time scan to automatically delete virus-infected files on drive D:\. This means these scans will execute on the first boot after the image of C:\ is restored. Images get old. Therfore, I have included some information regarding updating Avast Antivirus to version 6 and scheduling a boot-time scan. See http://drpcdr.ca/April_2011.pdf Sometimes Bootit NG will NOT successfully create the image using the customer's PC. If I get an error message, "image stream is corrupt" then I remove customer's HD and image it using my PC. If I get an error message, "error reading from file" then I remove customer's HD and copy the C:\ partition to a spare HD. Then I image the copied C:\ partition and paste it to the data partition of the customer's HD. 16. I provide a rescue kit and BARK WARNINGS about the possible misuse of BootitNG! The rescue kit consists of a double sided laminated 8.5 X 11 instruction sheet, BootitNG boot rescue CD and an 8 minute instructional video DVD. The rescue allows my customers to repair Windows themselves without the loss of data! My images of Windows are multi-user (3-7 users). Also, I set the privacy settings of IE and Firefox to remember nothing! Also upon logoff, shutdown and restart, Il System Wiper erases temporary Internet files, browser history and cookies. I deliberately turn off system restore and Windows update. I have lite and loaded images of Windows including a 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate for people who do video editing. If I multitask, fixing more than 1 PC simultaneously, then I can offer a discount. Things have been rough financially and I am surviving by dining with the homeless at soup kitchens in downtown Toronto! Computer repairs will always be in demand. However, people are slow to repair their computers because they cannot afford to fix them immediately! I have no images for Mac yet. Can't get my hands on a recent Mac!
