Please note all references to click means 1 single left click of mouse Sometimes (not often) I may have put backup1.img on a 2nd hard drive. If you have more than 1 hard drive then after clicking on partition work in step 6 below, at far left you will see HD 0 and HD 1. HD 1 is the 2nd hard drive. Click on it instead for step 7. Do not delete backup1.img. It may resemble garbage but it is your lifeboat when Windows sinks. Using Bootit is NOT intuitive. Never attempt to use the BootIt recovery CD without proper instructions! Doing so will create more problems on top of those you are trying to solve! Call me and wait for me to return your call. Remember I have no cell phone. It may take as long as 24 hours before I return your call! Please be patient for your FREE REPAIR BY PHONE during which I will assist you in completing the tasks listed here! Back in 2004 and early 2005 I issued the Bootit floppy disk. If you are using the floppy diskette then step 1 is to insert floppy diskette and step 2 is to turn on computer. Step 3 can be eliminated. I find the boot CD more durable than the floppy diskette. Also, I used to create images on CD sets of 1, 2, 3 or 4. To restore image from CDs see Help Restore System From Recovery Image CDs in the using bootit software link below this link on my website, http://drpcdr.ca Remember the restoration deletes everything on c:\ partition. Do not use the address bar history as bookmarks. Learn to bookmark your favorite websites properly: Click favorites >add to favorites >OK Everthing in my documents, favorites and myshared will remain on your data partition! Since 2004 I have been separating Windows from data. However this system setup is for 1 single user only. If you create a new user everything resets to the default settings (my documents and favorites on C:\ partition). Please do not create new users! Keep it 1 single user or keep the 5 users of my new Windows XP multi-user image and soon to come multi-user Windows 98 SE. In August 2006, I managed to create a 5 user Windows XP image. Only recently in 2006 did I acquire a computer caple of running Windows XP, a Pentium 3 running at 966 MHz. For a long time, I used a Pentium I computer, the first computer I built. I retired my old Pentium I computer in 2006. I will attempt to create a multi-user Windows 98 SE image soon! I realize many people share the 1 computer and want to have their own desktop setting. Be careful of porn and crack sites. Ignore popups requesting you to download and install software. Do not accept files in chat programs. Instaed ask your chat buddies to send the file to your email address. Beware of email attachments. Yahoo and hotmail automatically scan attachments for viruses. Don't install junk CDs coming in your mail at home! Best to explore the software and games already installed on your PC! Beware of file sharing software. They come with malware, spyware and virus. Do not install the CDs from Rogers and Bell Sympatico. These CDs contain drivers for the external highspeed modems. These are needed only when you lack a network adapter or it malfunctions. These drivers allow you to connect to the external modem via USB cable. Rogers Techs Listen up: You do NOT need to connect both USB and CAT 5 cable to the cable modem! If the customer has a NIC then connect the CAT 5 cable. If not then connect the USB. Leave both cables anyway, just in case. IMHO those Microsoft Works and Money CDs are GARBAGE! Do NOT install them! Beware of the games, hangaroo and hardwood solitaire. They attempt to spy on you. Avast or Zone Alarm will warn you about this. Just click remember first then click no. The firewall will not nag you again! Learn to use your firewall. Nothing needs to access your Internet network except Internet explorer, Mozillza Firefox, MSN messenger, yahoo messenger, trillian, avast antivirus, adaware, spybot, spywareblaster, kaza lite, sharaza, realplayer, windows media player, winamp, email clients, ftp clients, and sometimes microsoft word. When firewall pops up click remember first then yes or no. This way the firewall will not nag you. Keep the area around your computer dust free (especially behind the PC) Dust can paralyze the fan on top of CPU, in the power supply and inside the case. A crippled fan will cause your computer to shut off by itself. It does this to preserve itself from burning out! Also the surface on which the mouse moves should also be kept clean. When claening the screen, spray tiny amout of cleaning fluid (windex) on a rag NOT directly on the screen. With the computer turned off clean the keyboard with an old toothbrush moistened with tiny amount of thick shampoo. You can manually scan any drive for viruses by right clicking on it >scan with Avast Since around 2004, I created a Windows 98 SE image which puts the temp folder, swap file, temp Internet files, history, recent and cookies on its own small partition of 2 GB or less (usually drive E:\). The Data partition (Usually drive D:\) contains my documents, myshared and favorites. I tried to move the temp files of Windows XP to its own partition but I failed. Remember I had to borrow customer's computers for brief periods of time! So my Windows XP image uses only 2 partitions, usually C:\ and D:\. The Data partition (Usually drive D:\) contains my documents, myshared and favorites. Moving temp files to a separate partition is an attempt to reduce file fragmentation on C:\ partition caused by the creation and deletion of temp files. However, these temp files survive the restoration procedure. Aftter restoring your Windows 98 SE image customers should also delete cookies and temp Internet files remaining on drive E:\. Use Il system wiper and CCleaner to remove these temp files Everyone will need to update your antispyware programs like adaware, spybot and spywareblaster. Spybot and spywareblaster shield against spyware. This shield must be kept updated to keep Internet Explorer relatively immune from spyware. This may involve downloading the latest version of these programs, checking for updates then applying the new protection to your shields (immunization). Also, your msn messenger chat client may require you to update it. Other regular updates may include Macromedia flash and shockwave to play multimedia in Internet Explorer. Sometimes Realplayer also needs to update. When updating software it's best to download the entire standalone program to your hard drive then install it from there. Don't update unless it is absolutely necessary! NEVER UPDATE YOUR FIREWALL. NEVER UPDATE WINDOWS! Installing a newer version of Windows over your existing operating system will result in damage to your Windows! Immediately after you have updated everthing and all is working fine create a new image. See Help Create Recovery Image File For HD0 in the using bootit image software link just below this one on my website, http://drpcdr.ca Please refer to these instructions whenever your computer gives serious trouble.
